Experience and Credentials
I am a former motorcycle cop from a law enforcement agency in Southern California. I have completed more than 200 hours of intense rider training. I have also been a recreational motorcycle rider for more than 30 years.
I have given instruction to countless beginner and experienced motorcycle riders (including my wonderful wife of 29 years). I attended the Motorcycle Safety Foundation Basic Rider Course with my wife when she learned to ride and prior to my becoming a motorcycle cop. The Basic Rider Course is not a bad course, but I believe it is sorely lacking in some areas. After completing the police motorcycle rider training I thought, “Wow! I wish I actually knew how to ride when I taught my wife to ride!” I then embarked on a crusade to pass on valuable knowledge and training to the motorcycling world. Every motorcycle rider should learn the police motor cop techniques.
Police motorcycle training focuses primarily on slow speed maneuvering, which is the most difficult part of motorcycle riding. As dictated by the laws of physics, a motorcycle is not inclined to fall over at 10, 20 and 30+ MPH. However, once the speed is lowered (city traffic, parking lots, U-turns, right turns at intersections) it’s a whole new ball game! And…contrary to popular belief, the skills needed to properly control a motorcycle at slow speed are critical to proper control of a motorcycle at high speed. The techniques are simple and easy to learn, but the only way to master them is to be trained and to practice. It is my sincere belief that if you are not in complete control of your motorcycle at 3 MPH, you have no business going any faster!
